Elaine Morgan is a tenacious proponent of the aquatic ape hypothesis: the idea that humans evolved from primate ancestors who dwelt in watery habitats. Hear her spirited defense of the idea — and her theory on why mainstream science doesn’t take it seriously.

I have no background in any of the scientific schools of thought that Elaine talks about, but I found this fascinating – and so good to watch someone who obviously has set her stall contrary to the status quo. Regardless of whether you agree with her theories, you’ve got to credit Elaine with holding true to her beliefs…

Ah, Christmas…seems so long ago now. Especially after a working week at LBi. We headed down to Fifehead Magdalen in Dorset to spend some time amongst the cows and horses – and enjoy some fine food along the way. I managed to squeeze in some photography and some guitar amongst other things. Fab…

An odd feeling, nostalgia. And when it’s brought back by someone else’s perspective I’m not sure how to react. Anyways, it was interesting to read a post on Left and To the Back about some music that I was once involved with. Especially as playing the guitar is starting to become a part of my life again…

Polperro, CornwallI spent Easter at an amazingly quiet, relaxed seaside town in Cornwall – called Polperro. Fantastic atmosphere, friendly people – and of course some great scenic walks along the coastal path.

More photos from the trip here.

“the eerie and inexplicable sadness that lives at the heart of certain works of art”

Nick Cave, summing up what he looks for in music. A cool Guardian piece on this ‘feeling’. Wow. Inexplicable sadness seems to be a theme that’s cropping up a lot these days…and this picture gives me the same feeling, for some reason…

AAAArrrgggh. While I completely agree with the majority of this article on the increasing blend between home and work, work and learning - and I’ve been advocating many of its ideas for some time, it does wind me up that it has to end the way it does.Just what the world needs.Another slogan.

RIP Evel Knievel

A sad moment for anyone that grew up in the ’70s, was male, and entertained fantasies of strapping themselves to rockets to be fired over the Grand Canyon.  Or perhaps just jumping fountainsEvel is dead. Update: apologies to anyone that might have seen a somewhat disgusting picture attached to this post – last time I link through to someone else’s server for an image I think…

Car sur Seine

Just posting this for the hell of it…I was thinking of Paris this morning, and of how much I enjoyed our trip there

I’m fascinated by the controversy and animosity that’s been stirred up by the BBC and the Church of Scientology. A recent Panorama programme showed the BBC journalist John Sweeney investigating the COS, and being confronted with what in anyone’s book amounts to pretty intimidating behaviour. The programme itself wasn’t exactly unbiased – and you could say that the Church of Scientology isn’t exactly a difficult target to hit – but it’s not the first time that it’s been accused of similar behaviour, and you kind of sympathised with Sweeney as he completely lost it during his visit to a Scientologists’ museum in LA, dedicated to the message that psychiatry was responsible for the Holocaust, 9/11 etc. Another reporter that visited the museum received similarly odd treatment.

Despite this, I actually laughed out loud COS representative, John Harris, during one of his many tirades. He simultaneously reminded me of Tom Cruise, South Park and Agent Smith from the Matrix all at once!

The saga continues
